CTeL will be hosting its monthly Washington Live! Brown Bag Telehealth Seminar on Credentialing and Privileging of Telehealth Providers: The Latest Status, on Thursday, January 21, 2010, from 12:00pm -1:30 pm (EST).
The guest lecturer for this event will be Dr. Bob Wise, Vice President of the Division of Standards and Survey Methods at the Joint Commission (JC). In this position, Dr. Wise is responsible for the development of all standards and survey methods for current and new accreditation programs at the Joint Commission. He also conducts research to assess the value of creating or modifying accreditation standards.
At this event, Dr. Wise will discuss current standards that permit hospitals to rely upon the Joint Commission’s (JC) guidelines, for allowing the acceptance of credentialing and privileging decisions by another Joint Commission accredited facility, as an efficient means of vetting telehealth practitioners.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has taken a position requiring that all Medicare practitioners must undergo full credentialing and privileging at each originating site (the facility receiving the telehealth services), rather than follow the credentialing and privileging guidelines issued by the JC, which allow reliance upon the credentialing and privileging by the distant site (the facility or physician providing the telehealth services). Dr. Wise will discuss the changes that will occur in July when the JC becomes compliant with CMS guidelines.
